YOUR RETREAT LEADER and TEAM
RETREAT LEADER SINCE 2007
Retreats: This will my 13th year running retreats in Nosara, Costa Rica and each year keeps getting better and better!
My sweaty pursuits: I have been a dancer and a mover my whole life. I grew up dancing in Minneapolis at Ballet Arts (now Minnesota Dance Theatre). After graduating college at Marquette University I moved to Chicago to pursue my dance career. I studied with Joel Hall Dancers, Hubbard Street Dance Chicago and more. I co-founded my own dance company “SHE” and performed all over Chicago at festivals, theaters, and even bars. #keepinitreal In 1999 I attended the world renowned Pilates Center in Boulder, Colorado. I completed a 900 hour teacher certification in The Pilates Method. I found my passion. Teaching movement. And then began my 20 year + teaching journey.
Entrepreneur: In 2003 I opened Align Pilates in Minneapolis. Shortly after its opening I studied and became certified in The Gyrotonic Method. After studying Gyrotonic my mind was a “buzz” my Pilates teaching changed for the better and more than ever I felt like I could teach and and help anyone who walked through my doors. I went on to study Pranassage, at The Nosara Yoga Institute. Then, with my Align team, went on to develop the popular group class “Prana Stretch.” From there my entrepreneur self still craved more. I co created the Align Pilates Teacher Training that went on to be one the most well respected programs in the midwest area. I began running retreats in Nosara, Costa Rica in 2007 and still counting. The retreats just keep getting better and better. My next adventure was taking my dance, Pilates, and Gyrotonic background and developing an unforgettable Barre Class. Align Pilates was featured in The Star and Tribune (Mpls) for the best barre class in town. The studio went on to develop a rock solid teacher training program and proceeded to train teachers from 2010-2014 right at the height of the “barre buzz". In 2014 I hung up my reformer springs and decided to spend more time with the new love in my life, my daughter Hazel. Align closed its doors. #enjoytheride Of course I am still leading retreats and teaching privates and small groups in my private backyard cottage. Simplicity at its best.
What I love: Hanging out my kids Hazel (6) and Henry (2). Going on dates with my boyfriend (husband- Matthew) and snuggling with my 100 pound gentle giant. (dog-Clover). Surfing is my morning coffee. When I can squeeze in more I love to read, practice Pilates, push myself in cross fit, ride my electric cargo bike around town with all my kiddos (The Dragon).
Dreamer: To Nosara I wander. I have been wandering to this town since 2005. Since then I have dreamed of having kids, sending them to school in Nosara, and building a house for my family there. #livingmydream
HIGH INTENSITY CLASSES & NUTRITION
Retreats: This will be my third retreat travelling down to Costa Rica with Adrienne. I have always enjoyed being a participant and am looking forward to sharing my passions in 2020!
My sweaty pursuits: I have been an enthusiast for health and wellness since my childhood. A former gymnast and endurance runner. After college I was forced to go on a journey to find what moved me the most. At my brothers suggestion, I decided to try CrossFit in 2011 for the first time and since then have been on an obsessed path to show others what lifelong fitness is in its truest sense.
I became CrossFit level 1 certified in 2012, CrossFit Endurance certified in 2013 and in 2016 decided to further my studies and received my CrossFit level 2 certification.
Most recently I have deepened my passion for health and wellness and became a certified Fitness Nutrition Specialist through ISSA. It is my strong belief that food is thy medicine.
Practitioner: I have spent the last 8 plus years practicing and learning ways to understand what feeling good really means. I believe that moving every day in a way that moves you is the best way to live. Eating real food and enjoying the pleasures of good friends and family is the secret to happiness. Helping people establish balance and teaching them how to put themselves first is my passion.
What I love: I love being with my two babies Mary (2) ,Ryan (1) and my husband, Matt. We enjoy going for walks, playing in our backyard and SUMMERS! I look forward to working at my brother’s gym, CrossFit My Town every week. The place where lives are changed. #blessed
VINYASA YOGA, YOGA SCULPT, & BARRE
My sweaty pursuits: I’ve always had an abundance of energy and enthusiasm for life. Growing up, I channeled it into athletics as well as 8 years of classical dance. Though I loved the physical activity, I felt something was missing. When I was 16, I found Kundalini Yoga and Meditation. These practices opened me up to my true nature through spirituality. After only a few classes, it became clear that my vocation was to share this with others and become a teacher. I’ve been passionately teaching yoga and barre classes for over 9 years. In 2010, I graduated from the 230-hour yoga teacher training program at the Yoga Center of Minneapolis. I trained and studied to teach barre under Adrienne Fitzmaurice at Align Pilates in 2012. My teaching style is dynamic, upbeat, and playful. You can expect a challenging and thoughtful full-body workout choreographed to an ever changing playlist. My movement inspiration comes from dance, hula hooping, and Pilates while being rooted in yoga alignment and philosophy. Join me on your mat for sweaty sessions that will leave you feeling energized, positive and peaceful.
Creator: I can’t help but have my hands in something creative. Writing is probably my favorite way to express myself. Whether it’s journaling, poetry, blogging (gretaertl.com), or developing inspirational Instagram content (@gretaertl), I love words! I also greatly enjoy painting with lots of color, hip-hop dance, cooking, and creating business strategies for heart-centered entrepreneurs.
What I love: My 3 words are: Teach, Inspire, Create. I love working with others individually and in groups to help them realize their true nature. My favorite way to do this is by teaching yoga and barre classes. To provide well for others, I know I must prioritize self-care...which I love! Kundalini yoga, daily baths, Transcendental Meditation, acupuncture and infrared saunas are all part of my self-care rituals. To get inspired, I enjoy reading (mostly memoirs and non-fiction) and listening to motivational podcasts. Besides that, I love cooking, eating, furry animals, and anything in a bikini on a sunny beach!
Retreats and world traveler: I am very excited to have the opportunity to share my love of movement and Wellness Coaching at the Pura Vida 2020 Retreat with Adrianne and the rest of the tribe leaders. I have hosted many retreats over the past 15 years in Tulum and Isla Holbox Mexico and Playa Negri, Costa Rica. I fell in love with the Bodhi Tree last year when I was a guest at the Pura Vida Retreat and I’m super excited to return.
Sweaty pursuit, sweaty life and sweaty business: Call me lucky. I’ve embodied my passion for movement, joy and soulful leadership my entire life. I live and breathe wellness as a business owner, an educator and influencer for thousands of fitness fans and Pilates teachers. I have a lot of fun! I really love being a student and have been honored to sit at the feet of so many amazing teachers…some of the best in the world. My Pilates teachers include Dorothy Lundstrom, Mary Bowen, Kathy Grant, Ron Fletcher, Amy Taylor-Alpers, Rachel Taylor Segel and many, many more. (sidebar) …Adrianne and I met in Boulder when we were both pursuing our Pilates training at “The Pilates Center of Boulder” 20 years ago!
I’ve studied yoga all over the world with Baron Baptiste, Jason Crandall, Rusty Wells to name a few and I’ve taken a deep dive in to meditation with Luke Ketterhagen, Deepok Chopra and WAH!.
My newest entre-adventure is called: “Live Your Well”. It’s pretty easy really… move around, do the things you love doing, spend time with the people you love, eat good food, breathe big, keep it simple, have fun and laugh a lot. Oh yeah…don’t take things too seriously.
Things I love: Hanging out with family and friends • the ocean • swimming in the ocean • my backyard in Minneapolis • laughing • Pilates • conversations that connect • sunshine • growing stuff • tequila • the smell of geranium • foot rubs • beautiful spaces • kindness in action
